Oh and unfortunatly you cant do what Dave H said and put the box on standby, as BBC RB wont be able to be recorded else, but it might not be an issue on an old digi box anyway as no Sky + signal to receive.The service was launched on 23 September 1999 as BBC Text. You could use the old Sky digi box upstairs for that by setting it up on BBC RB (manually tuned and using other channels), then plug in eather a VCR, DVD recorder or an external PVR. The only problem is you cant record BBC RB on the Sky + box even manually, you need an external device to record BBC RB, like a DVD recorder or even VCR.

You're missing out on HD on the second box so it would be worth ringing Sky to see what deal you can get on an HD box for upstairs, or failing that look on eBay for a cheap one. When you get back, look into getting another feed run from the dish to the upstairs box, and it will work fully. When you go away, tune it to the channel you want to record before putting it in standby just to be on the safe side. It should still work OK to do a single unattended recording though. The box will only have one feed, so will be restricted in what it can do, and there is no single feed mode on the old Sky+ boxes. Get the card paired to it and you'll be good to go. Put your old Sky+ box upstairs instead of the non-PVR box.
